Qinghai Lake

The Tibetan name of Qinghai Lake is “Cuowenbu” which is meaning “blue sea”). Located in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and in Qinghai Province, it is formed by the fault settlement between Datong Mountain, Riyue Mountain and Qinghai Nanshan in the Qilian Mountains. It is the largest inland lake in China and the origin of the name of Qinghai Province.

The lake has a vast area, with about 360 kilometers around the lake, and the lake water is vast and blue and ethereal. The lake is surrounded by mountains, and what is close to the lake is the vast grassland. The scenery here is magnificent and beautiful. There are many areas and landscapes for viewing. It is an important scenic spot for visiting Qinghai.

Qinghai Lake has a plateau continental climate, with sufficient sunlight and strong sunshine; it is cold in winter and cool in summer, and it features the short warm season, long cold season, strong winds and sandstorms in spring, less rainfall, rain and heat in the same season, distinct dry and wet seasons. Such a climate determines that Qinghai Lake has different beauty in all seasons. The color of the lake will change with the weather and light, and sometimes there will be multiple colors in a day, which is fascinated.

The suitable time to visit Qinghai Lake is from April to August. Among them, July to August is particularly beautiful. There are large areas of rape blossoms by the lake, and the yellow flower fields and the endless blue lake complement each other, which is very beautiful. April to June is a good time for bird watching on Bird Island on the lake. In addition, Qinghai Lake is frozen for thousands of miles in winter, and you can also feel the majesty of nature.

You can only go to one side of Qinghai Lake, or you can go around the lake. If you simply look at the lake, most tourists will choose to be on the southern side of lake, where the grassland is very beautiful. It is not necessary to enter the scenic area, and you can walk to the lakeside to view the lake through the grassland of the local Tibetans. You can also enjoy yak riding, horseback riding and other entertainment activities. If you visit around the lake, you can charter a car from Xining and make a clockwise tour. This is also the direction for the local Tibetans to turn to the lake when they make pilgrimages to the holy lake.
