The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is the tomb of Sun Yat-sen. It is located in the Zhongshan Scenic Area in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing, adjacent to Linggu Temple in the east and Ming Tomb in the west. The entire building complex is built on the hillside, arranged on a central axis from south to north, and the cemetery is in an alarm-shaped pattern.

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum includes buildings such as Boaifang, tomb passage, mausoleum gate, stele pavilion, sacrificial hall and tomb chamber. The entrance square of the mausoleum has a tall granite archway on which is the two gold characters written by Sun Yat-sen, meaning “fraternity”. Going north through Boaifang, there is a tomb road nearly 400 meters long, with a total of 392 stone steps and a 73-meter drop. Walk along the tomb road to reach the mausoleum gate with blue glazed tiles on top. Then enter the stele pavilion and continue forward until the worship hall.

To reach the top of The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, you need to climb long steps. Every time there is a platform for resting your feet. There is a visual technique in the design, so that when you look from the bottom up, you can only see the steps but not the platform, and when you look from the top down, you only see the platform but not the steps. You might as well pay attention. There are two large tripods on the fifth platform, and one of the tripod walls still has shell holes caused by the Japanese invasion of China.

On the highest peak of the mountain is the main building of The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum: the sacrificial hall, which is a palace-like building. In the center of the sacrificial hall is a seated statue of Sun Yat-sen that is carved from white marble. The base is engraved with six reliefs, which portray Sun Yat-sen’s revolutionary activities.

There are two copper tomb doors in the sacrificial hall. Inside the door is a circular tomb. In the center is a long tomb with a white marble statue of Sun Yat-sen on the top and Sun Yat-sen’s body buried below. But now the tomb is not open to the public.

Many people think that The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is very magnificent at first sight. The mausoleum is very long, the building is very artistic, and the color scheme is very beautiful! Standing on the highest point, you will feel that it is very cool and you can admire the surrounding Nanjing City. It is worth a visit.
